Bernie's is not the only road to Single Payer

Senator Sanders received a lot of deserved press yesterday for his unveiling of a single payer health care plan. While he has received the most attention (and most endorsements from aspiring Democratic Presidential Candidates), his is not the only road to single payer. As previous posts have relayed, other political figures in Congress and the States have unveiled differing versions of how to get to where most other advanced countries have been for years. Others have advocated building on the existing systems in place to increase coverage and reduce costs. Two things should be considered when pursuing single payer.

1) Other than Medicare, how have attempts at single payer systems fared in this country at the state level? The experiences of Vermont and Colorado in trying to accomplish this should be educational on how to accomplish this and avoid the obstacles they encountered.

2) Are the votes there in Congress? Right now they are not and this can be an issue Democrats can run on to get the representation necessary to pass the needed legislation.

It is up to you the American People. Without your participation, especially at the ballot box, we will never come close to becoming the country we are supposed to be.
