Since the New Deal in the 1930s (which to be a fair was a sequel to his Progressive Republican cousin Teddy's Square Deal and New Nationalism Programs), it has been Democrats that have been the main party to preside over fiscal discipline and prosperity. While there have been exceptions with bits of progressive legislation in Republican Administrations (The Federal Highway System and formation of N.A.S.A. under Eisenhower, The E.P.A. and Pell Grants under Nixon; the modern Special Education system under Ford, The A.D.A. under Bush I and NCLB and the Prescription Drug Benefit under Bush II), the great forward strides in this country with fiscal prudence to the budget have occurred under Democratic Administrations. Even on job creation, Democrats have largely eclipsed Republicans with Clinton, Obama, and Johnson being in the top four. Only Reagan was the only Republican to make the top five but one interesting tidbit here is President Carter oversaw the creation of a little over ten million jobs in his one term while it took eight years for 15 million jobs to be created under President Reagan. Democrats and Progressives need to run on the obvious. They are the party to move the country forward and competently steer the fiscal ship of state.
