There was once upon a time when tuition for a year at state universities was the equivalent to one month's mortgage payment. Now granted that was several decades ago but the cost of tuition at state universities, like health care, has risen many times above the rate of inflation. While this has set an economic boon for the student loan industry (some of whom are major backers of both political parties), it has made a whole generation of students major debtors. That is not right. A lot of our state universities' costs are supposed to, according to state constitutions, be mostly paid for by the states. Unfortunately, states like Arizona have not done that for several years. That needs to be corrected. Education and the acquiring of knowledge and skills should be relatively free. It is time to get back to that.
