Tucker Carlson is right: Any leader that knew about the Coronavirus Pandemic and did nothing about it Should Resign

This has been a week for revelations on how American leaders reacted when United States Intelligence and National Security Officials started to warn them about the potential seriousness of Coronavirus starting in January 2020.

In the case of Senators Richard Burr of North Carolina (the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee,) Kelly Loeffler of Georgia, James Inhofe of Oklahoma, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and Dianne Feinstein of California, their first instinct was to sell off several of their stock investments in the days after receiving a briefing on the severity of the Coronavirus.

Burr was more duplicitous than the others because while he was selling his stocks before they tanked, he wrote a joint “op-ed” with Senator Lamar Alexander, giving the best impersonation of Kevin Bacon from Animal House, more or less saying the equivalent of  “Remain Calm, all is well”  to the American People about the virus.

Burr gave a more honest telling (according to reporting from NPR) of the dangers of the virus in a private meeting with constituents, equating the pandemic with the Spanish Influenza Virus following World War One.

What is worse than the reactions from Burr and the other Senators is the apparent lack of interest in protecting the American People from the 2016 Popular Vote Loser-Liar in Chief.

Reporting on March 20, 2020, from the Washington Post reveals a President who at first seemed unconcerned and disinterested in the virus.

In a January 18 phone conversation with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Trump seemed dismissive of the Coronavirus, switching the topic to “flavored vaping products.”

When more alarm bells from multiple White House and Intelligence officials rang in late January and February, Mr. Trump, more concerned with the United States Stock Market (and his reelection chances,) performance instead of the Coronavirus,  repeatedly discounted the threat, thinking the virus would not hit the United States hard and that he could trust the assurances of Chinese leadership who were providing him “rosy scenarios” that the Presidents own people did not trust.

Mr. Trump reportedly became irate when “Nancy Messonnier, a senior CDC official, sounded perhaps the most significant public alarm to that point when she told reporters that the coronavirus was likely to spread within communities in the United States and that disruptions to daily life could be “severe.” 

Only when the Stock Market started its fall towards levels not seen before Mr. Trump’s Presidency did the alarm bells go off in the mind of the Stable Genius.

On his nightly show on Fox News, commentator Tucker Carlson (as reactionary as they come) said that Senator Burr should resign for putting his own personal financial interests ahead of the countries.

Tucker Carlson is right. Anyone who tells the people one thing and acts in their own self-interest when they know the opposite is true is unworthy of public office and should resign.

Burr and the Senators who enriched themselves by selling their stocks, Republican or Democrat, should go.

So should the President of the United States.

While it is not known if he divested himself of any stocks because of the Coronavirus, his lack of interest, concern, and action when people he appointed were telling him day after day that the virus was a danger to the American People should immediately disqualify him from serving in the Oval Office.

Do the people (even his blindest supporters) really want someone so cavalier to be responsible for their safety one more day or four more years.

Hopefully not.

The KKK Endorsed Candidate Steps in It Again by calling the Coronavirus the Chinese Virus

EJ Montini of AZ Central noted in his most recent column that Mr. Trump has resorted to calling the Coronavirus “The Chinese Virus” in retaliation for operatives from China spreading a false conspiracy theory that the American military called the virus.

When asked about this at the daily Coronavirus briefing this morning where it was announced the Defense Department and FEMA would be accelerating their contributions to combat the virus (March 18, 2020,) the 2016 KKK Endorsed Candidate, who has been acting more Presidential the last couple of days (other than his attempt to rewrite history in saying he knew it was a pandemic all along,) refused to back down, saying he was “not being racist” and turned it back on China, blaming them for spreading their outlandish conspiracy theories against the American Military.

A reporter from NPR then asked him to comment on one of his staffers calling the virus “Kung Flu.” The 2016 KKK Endorsed Candidate was evasive in his response and ended the briefing after one additional question.

During the Black Death in the Fourteenth Century, many Anti-Semitic Acts were committed against Jews because of false accusations that they had contaminated local water supplies.

There should not be Twenty-First Equivalent of those Middle Age Acts today.

There should not be a country spreading false conspiracy theories about the origins of the Coronavirus like China is doing.

There should also not be a President of the United States stoking nativist and paranoid sentiments calling a virus based on where it originated.

Some people may listen to this and look for scapegoats (innocent people) to take out their fears and ignorance.

This can not be allowed to continue.

Humanity will get through this Public Health Crisis faster and better by working together and not building walls of mistrust and ignorance between us.

If only the KKK Endorsed Candidate can see that.

It is Time to Bring Voting in Arizona and the United States into the Twenty First Century

As Blog for Arizona Founder Michael Bryan stated in his March 15 piece on Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes taking the initiative on sending mail-in ballots to Valley Residents so they could avoid going to polling centers during the Coronavirus:

“Maybe this crisis will have the silver lining of making the need for voting registration reforms more immediate to Arizona’s legislature.”

Since that piece, other issues across the country due to the Coronavirus have prompted suggestions that reforms were needed to fully take the voting process into the Twenty-First Century. These included:

• Ohio Governor Mike Devine closing polling locations hours before they were supposed to open.
• Polling Judges not showing up and equipment issues in Illinois.

Lousiana and Georgia had already, because of the virus, postponed their primaries to the beginning of summer.

Furthermore, columnist Laurie Roberts of the Arizona Republic has pointed out that the drive to get written signatures for popular ballot initiatives like Outlaw Dirty Money and Invest in Ed 2.0 may suffer because people are not going to public venues to sign the petitions.

It is time for the nation’s local, state, and national leaders to strongly consider universal mail-in or online voting/petition signing.

This would not be a major shift for significant parts of the country as Colorado, Washington, and Oregon already has All-Mail in Elections.

Other states like Arizona, Florida, and California allow early voting by mail or the same day as the person drops off their ballot at the poll location.

Moving forward, Senators Amy Klobuchar and Ron Wyden have proposed the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act of 2020.

This legislation, as written in a joint Washington Post column by them, would:

“Help election officials meet this pandemic head-on. Our legislation will guarantee every voter a secure mail-in paper ballot and help states cover the cost of printing, self-sealing envelopes, ballot tracking, and postage.”

Leaders in states like Kansas and Maryland have already, because of the virus, moved to shift their primaries and go to all mail-in balloting.

It is time for every state in this country to provide the option for all voters to mail in their ballots or, eventually, vote on-line after all cybersecurity safeguards are satisfied. It should not be necessary for voters to stand on long lines waiting to vote anymore.

State Leaders should also make it easier for initiatives to get on the ballot by allowing voters to electronically sign petitions online.

If online signatures are good enough to secure candidates’ place on the ballot, it should be good enough for initiatives to provide more funds for schools or make campaigns reveal their dark money contributions.

This is the Twenty-First Century and it is unfortunate that a crisis like the Coronavirus may be the catalyst to finally bring the American voting process into it.

Put People First in the Next $850 Billion Stimulus Bill

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has proposed a $750 stimulus package to help people get through the Coronavirus.

According to journalists at the Washington Post, Schumer’s ideas would:

“Expand unemployment insurance (probably also build on the sick leave provisions on last week’s House bill,) provide money for schools, public transportation, expand Medicaid funding, expand more investments in health care, provide loan assistance, and halt evictions and foreclosures, among other things.”

The Trump Administration is coming out with its own $850 billion proposals which include (wait for it) a payroll tax holiday (it does not help contracted or laid-off workers,) foreclosure protection, and aid for small, medium and large industries crippled by the Coronavirus like the airline industry.

The Senate, after taking the weekend off, still has to quickly approve the bipartisan House 6201 measure that passed last week. That legislation would provide free coronavirus testing, increase assistance in unemployment insurance, Medicaid, and Food Stamps. It would also provide paid sick and emergency leave to twenty percent of America’s workers.

Additional measures to help the American People include various proposals by public servants like Obama Economic Advisor Jason Furman, Senators Mitt Romney, Tom Cotton, Cory Booker, Michael Bennet, Sherrod Brown, Representative Ro Khanna and Representative Tim Ryan to give each American a cash grant ranging from $1000 to $6000.

Other ideas concern directives to increase the supply of ventilators and other medical equipment.

Public service advocates are calling for additional monies to help the “11 million food-insecure children” in the country. Many of these children are not going to school because of closures. School officials across the country like those in Maricopa County, Arizona are devising schedules for families to get free and reduced meals but more will need to be done.

Governors like New York’s Andrew Cuomo is asking for assistance from FEMA and the Army Corp of Engineers to help set up emergency hospital facilities.

A bipartisan group of legislators in State Capitols like those in Arizona are calling for legislation to help those in this crisis.

It is vital that no matter what the amount of the stimulus package, at the national or state level, that the legislation PUTS PEOPLE FIRST.

One of the criticisms of the recession bailout from 2008 was that it directed virtually all the aid to the financial sector. The person looking to pay the mortgage was virtually ignored.

History can not repeat itself here.

The people are what drives the economic engines of this country. That is not to say that small, medium, and large industries do not need assistance. They do.

But any assistance those industries get will be throwing away money if people do not get the aid like paid sick leave or cash grants to help them through this period so they can use their income later to plan for trips and invest in other economic sectors instead of spending the summer catching up on the bills or worse going bankrupt.

Learn from 2008 and PUT PEOPLE FIRST.

For the Good of the Country, Biden and Sanders Democrats will need to Learn from History and Unite

Russian Bolshevism under Lenin was not a majority movement in 1917 and 1918.

Italian Fascism headed by Mussolini was not a majority movement from 1919 to 1922.

German Nazism personified by Hitler was not a majority movement from 1919 to 1933.

Richard Nixon’s 1968 election was not the will of the majority.

The same with George W. Bush’s victory in 2000.

And Donald Trump’s in 2016.

Yet all these minority movements and leaders gained power.

How?

Because the multiple forces of progressive action In those countries could not put aside differences to band together and stop the more radical or reactionary elements in their societies.

In Russia, moderate Social Revolutionaries and Mensheviks after the 1917 October Revolution could not put aside their differences soon enough to stop the Bolsheviks in time. The Soviet Union would form and the world is still living with the consequences.

In Italy, differences over how much religion should be intertwined in public life made an alliance between the Social Democrats and the Catholic Popular Party impossible. The Fascist Movement took advantage of the post-war chaos and lack of governing consensus to slip through the political cracks and assume power in 1922.

The failure of the German Communists and Social Democrats (mostly because of Stalin dictating directions from Moscow) to bridge their differences helped provide an opening for the right to make their Faustian deal with Hitler in 1933. Everyone knows how well that turned out for the globe during World War Two from 1939 to 1945.

Not to be equated with Bolshevism, Fascism, and Nazism, United States Presidential Elections over the last 52 years have shown how right-wing conservatism profited from splits among progressive forces.

Richard Nixon’s Presidency, and Watergate, may not have happened had Eugene McCarthy holdouts not pouted about Hubert Humphrey (a pioneer in Civil Rights and Medicare legislation) being the 1968 Democratic Nominee and stayed home.

Protest votes on the left for Ralph Nader in 2000 (as well as Butterfly ballots in Florida) cost popular vote winner Al Gore the Electoral College in that election. People should ask would there have been a 9/11, a war in Iraq, two conservative Supreme Court Justices (Roberts and Alito,) and the 2008 Great Recession if Gore had won.

Short-sighted Sanders and Obama supporters who chose to either support Donald Trump, Jill Stein or stay home caused Hillary Clinton to lose the Electoral College in 2016. Well, there are two new reactionary justices on the Supreme Court (Gorsuch and Kavanagh.) The Affordable Care Act and Roe V Wade are in jeopardy. There is an inept political team (not the scientists) in the White House in charge of combatting this Coronavirus.

Based on these historical examples (books for reading like Raymond Sontag’s A Broken World, Robert Massie’s Nicholas and Alexandra, and Benjamin Carter Hett’s The Death of Democracy are highly recommended,) it is vitally important that Biden and Sanders Democrats unite following the primaries.

People need to remember that there really is more that unites both Democratic Factions than separates them.

Both sides want:

• Universal health care.
• Affordable college.
• A Green New Deal.
• Investments in Infrastructure.
• Universal Pre K
• A rise in the minimum wage.
• To get rid of Donald Trump.

Voters on both sides should not let how one candidate would achieve the same goals differently or how one candidate voted on an issue 25 years ago force them to never endorse that person for the Presidency.

The country is in trouble.

The Democrats need to unite or Donald Trump and all he represents will win again and take the nation further into the abyss.

For the good of the country, Biden and Sanders Democrats need to learn from history and not repeat it.
