Idea of the Week: Enough is Enough: Stop the Epidemic of School Shootings.

The headline of the Washington Post link below tells it all. It states 2018 has been deadlier for schoolchildren than service members.

Read that again and let it sink in.  As of today, the children in this country would be safer in a war zone in the Middle East than going to school.

That is insane.

While it is impossible to prevent all of these tragedies like the one that took place in Santa Fe, Texas, Parkland Florida, and all the other shootings in between and before, it is time for this country to take unified steps to reduce these occurrences. These include:

1) Greater Background Checks and gun waiting periods.

2) Raising the purchasing age on weapons.

3) Having signature devices on weapons that means the weapon can only be used by its owner.

4) Having the police or a rotating designation of National Guard patrolmen at random schools to show a presence.

5) Remodeling schools to make them safer and more difficult for a shooter to inflict any or as much damage.

6) Build smaller schools that are easier to guard and monitor.

7) Improve mental health and guidance services to identify children that may be a danger to themselves and others.

Again, these measures will not solve all the problems. A person with no signs of duress or belligerent behavior with access to weapons from a family member can still slip "through the cracks."

However, the above seven steps or other common sense gun control measures should be adopted to make sure as many of these incidents are stopped as possible. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
