Be afraid of the False Populism Steve Bannon and Donald Trump represent.

Be afraid of the Populism Steve Bannon and Donald Trump represent.

Mr. Bannon was on Fareed Zakaria GPS this evening and he gave a credible performance explaining his brand of economic nationalism laced with populism and nativism.

What should scare most people is he makes his arguments in a logical and thoughtful way that would make most people think that "he may have a point."

Do not be fooled. Mr. Bannon's brand of populism, adopted by President Trump and imitated in some version in countries like Britain, Italy, Hungary, and Poland is nothing but subtle attempts at returning to a form of xenophobic fascism without the mass executions.

Unfortunately, significant portions of these countries (and others) populations have fallen for the false prophecies of Bannon's message. History has shown that such attitudes, while resilient and never quite stamped out, never lead to long-term progress for any nation and its populace.

As mentioned in previous posts, Democrats and Progressives need to arrive at a forward-looking platform that will appeal to the people, especially those that are susceptible to the branding dogma of these false prophets.

Democrats and Progressives cannot take for granted that people will not fall for it.

Enough people in this country fell for it and gave Donald Trump an electoral college victory even though he lost the popular vote.

Enough people in Britain fell for the false promises of Brexit and look what uncertainty it has spawned.

Enough people fell for it in Poland their judicial system is being compromised.

Enough people in Italy and Germany thought Mussolini and Hitler would bring stability, order, leadership, and prosperity and that they would forget their militaristic and xenophobic proclamations once entrusted with the responsibility of power. Look how well that turned out at the cemeteries for the war dead and persecuted.

Everyone needs to be afraid of the False Populism Steve Bannon and Donald Trump represent and take steps to confine it to the ash heap of history.

Progressives and Democrats can do this by promoting and, when elected, enacting programs for the people that give them hope.
