The Dying Party of Lincoln proclaimed this week the best in the KKK endorsed candidate's presidency. They point to 3.7 % unemployment, the renegotiating of N.A.F.T.A. and the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
Let us take each one of these apart and add two other events that may shed a different picture.
1) Having a 3.7 % unemployment rate is indeed excellent news. The problem is this trend did not start with the policies of the popular vote loser. This started with the economic policies of his predecessor and the KKK candidate has not broken it yet, despite his sugar rush deficit-busting tax cuts and tariff raising policies. When the sugar rush eventually becomes a lull and the tariffs start to hurt our exports, let us see what is the result of the Republican economic policies. This "voodoo" approach to fiscal management has hurt the country before and it will undoubtedly hurt us again.
2) The renegotiation of N.A.F.T.A. may indeed be a step in the right direction. Too bad this could not have been done earlier with the Trans-Pacific Partnership that President Obama concluded where many of these clauses were already agreed to.
3) The confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh is the fulfillment of conservative fantasies and liberal nightmares. The chipping away of Roe vs Wade may commence and further threats on environmental protection, LGBTQ rights, and voting rights may also result. However, Kavanaugh comes to the court like a wounded animal with Democrats salivating at the possibility of investigating him for perjury in his remarks before the Senate Judiciary Hearing during his confirmation process should they take over one or both houses of Congress. His tirade for an opening statement and subsequent comments following Dr. Ford showed the world that he lacks the temperament to be a justice on the Supreme Court. The majority of the country does not agree with him on the issues that he may provide the deciding vote on, thus providing more reasons to vote for Democrats and Progressives. Finally, if the Democrats take over one of both houses of Congress, they will probably investigate all the leads regarding sexual assault the F.B.I. was not authorized to. One should remember that while no one corroborated Dr. Ford's testimony, no one corroborated his either. Mark Judge, with no statute of limitations in Maryland, has a vested interest in lying. Dr. Ford's girlfriend, despite not recalling this party, also said she believed her friend. The other witness PJ just said he did not recall. While the presumption of innocence must be maintained, the absence of guilt for either Kavanaugh or Judge has not been fully satisfied to most objective observers. It was especially galling that Republican Senators all conceded that Dr. Ford was assaulted but she was wrong on the identity of her attacker. Talk about threading the needle. If Democrats do regain control of one of the houses of Congress, Justice Kavanaugh will be making a return visit or two.
Three other events occurred this week that should make Republicans pause:
1) There were seven more indictments in the Russian Investigation. For a witch hunt, it is sure finding a lot of witches including several individuals close to the KKK endorsed candidate like his former Campaign Chairman and his first National Security Advisor.
2) The New York Times may have revealed financial impropriety by the popular vote loser and several of his siblings in reference to how Fred Trump handled his organization's finances.
3) The Popular Vote loser himself is very combustible and could make comments like he did mocking Dr. Ford at a rally or insulting a female journalist from A.B.C. He is good for at least one of these occurrences a week. There is no electoral college to save Republican prospects in 2018.
When Republicans say (as does some pollsters) that the enthusiasm gap has narrowed, remember two points: First, the Democrats are still leading in the polls, especially for the House. Second, there is still more anger on the Democratic side toward Republican policies and obstinacy than Republican toward what happened to Kavanaugh and that should dissipate now that he is on the court.
Democrats need to remember that most of the country supports progressive ideas and positions. We need to remember that the KKK President is a popular vote loser President. We need to remember that it has been Republican candidates that have been losing competitive seats and barely holding on to those that they once took for granted since 2015.
We need to remember that it is important to turn out and vote this November for Democrats so imbalances in setting up local and state voting districts can be remedied. We must also make sure everyone that can vote is registered and poised to vote on election day.
Do not let Republican gloating about the Kavanaugh confirmation, the last week, and Republican Enthusiasm scare you. They are the ones afraid and are trying to delude themselves and us. Do not get swayed by their bombastic statements and remember to turn out and vote on November 6.
