Earlier today (December 2, 2019) Montana Governor Steve Bullock suspended his campaign for the Democratic Presidential Nomination.
He is the third of four current or former Democratic Governors (John Hickenlooper and Jay Inslee were the others) who tried to garner support for their presidential candidacies this 2020 election cycle.
The fourth, former Massachusetts Governor and late entry Deval Patrick, is still in the running.
It is a pity that these three Governors did not excite the voters.
These are individuals who had solid records as progressive executives of their states, sometimes bringing all sides from the political spectrum together to move their people and states forward.
All of them had compelling success stories to tell and sound pragmatic inclusive progressive programs to offer.
If any of them had secured the nomination, they would have been a strong general election candidate against Mr. Trump, especially in the areas in the middle of the country that the Democrats want to recapture and expand to.
It was not that long ago that being viewed as a successful governor would propel one’s candidacy to serious consideration. Just think of former Governors Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush in recent history.
While not taking anything away from the remaining candidates, it is regrettable for the country that these Governors will not be around to further the debate and present their case.
Maybe Governor Bullock, like Governor Hickenlooper, will eventually decide to run for the Senate.
After defeating Mr. Trump, making sure Political Prince of Darkness, Enemy of the People Obstructionist in Chief Moscow Mitch McConnell is no longer Senate Majority Leader (if he is still there in 2021) should be the highest priority for voters that care for good government.
