Another Issue for Democrats to Run On in 2022: Cutting Child in Poverty in Half

Unlike the President he worked for, Joe Biden appears to understand more the political benefits of bragging about popular programs.

Like cutting child poverty in half this year with the implementation of the expanded child tax credit from the American Rescue Plan for qualifying families (single parents who earn up to $75,000 and married couples who earn $150,000 at most.)

Starting on July 15, 2021, most eligible families will see $300 direct deposited into their bank accounts if they have children from six to seventeen and $250 for those with kids under six.

Those that do not receive direct deposit will have checks mailed to them. Outreach efforts will be made to low-income families that do not pay taxes on how to receive the funds.

This is perhaps the greatest victory in the war against poverty after Medicaid expansion and health care subsidies provided for in Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act.)

And not one single Republican voted for it.

The Biden/Harris Administration is not letting anyone forget it either.

President Biden issued a statement through the White House Press Office, touting the implementation of the expanded tax credit, relaying:

"The American Rescue Plan is delivering critical tax relief to the middle class and hard-pressed working families with children. With today’s announcement, about 90% of families with children will get this new tax relief automatically, starting in July. While the American Rescue Plan provides for this vital tax relief to hard-working families for this year, Congress must pass the American Families Plan to ensure that working families will be able to count on this relief for years to come. For working families with children, this tax cut sends a clear message: help is here."

He also made a point of bringing the expanded child tax credit up and the direct deposits starting in July at the beginning of a COVID 19 update to the American People this morning (May 17, 2021.)

With these tax credits set to last for a year (although Biden and Democrats want to expand them in the American Families Plan) and the 2022 midterms coming up, President Biden appears to be framing the issue of combatting child poverty as one Democrats can run on against Republicans.

Not there is any shortage of issues to run against Republicans on given how they voted against expanding COVID vaccination efforts in the American Rescue Plan while supporting ways to suppress the right to vote in future elections in states across the country, and are continuously worshiping the cult of Trump and their big lie that the 2020 election was stolen from them.

Still, when lower and middle-class families go to the polls in November 2022 and 2024, Biden and the Democrats would do well to continually remind them, like the President did today, that they were the ones that made it possible to lift their children out of poverty through their build back better and expand the middle-class agenda while Republicans screamed the big lie of socialism.

Parents should remember who were the public servants that made their children's lives better and those who voted not to.
