To paraphrase an often used quote that "there is more that unites us than divides us," progressives and moderates in the Democratic Party need to come together because Donald Trump, despite all his imperfections and incompetencies has tapped into a part of the Democratic voting base that feels (rightly or wrongly) he connects with them. A civil war that divides the party will only help him. A discussion of where to blend progressive goals with moderate pragmatism is called for. The Democratic Leadership's "A Better Deal" proposals are a start in the right direction but could probably use progressive tweaking here and there. Progressive calls for single payer and free college are finding majority support but moderates and seasoned legislators know how to steer the legislation to avoid a filibuster. If both camps of the Democratic Party can come together and offer a vision for moving forward, then people in the rust belt will feel that we get them again and come home.
