Progressive Ideas of the Week: Becoming the indispensable nation again

When President Truman started the Marshall Plan and Point Four Programs in the late 1940's, he and the Congress did it so people would have hope and opportunity to build better lives. They also hoped it would stop the appeal and spread of Communism to these areas and in most of the cases, with the help here and there of the newly formed Central Intelligence Agency and our occupying armed forces, these programs worked in accomplishing these goals because the people in these areas lost the appetite for trying communism as an alternative and the United States solidified its position as the indispensable Western Nation.

With countries around the world failing left and right, the United States has an opportunity to regain the momentum it has recently ceded to nations like China and Germany and become the indispensable nation by rescuing these failing nations through a new Marshall Plan and Point Four Program. Will it be hard? Yes. Will it cost a lot of money? Yes but considerably less what we pay for one or two state of the art advanced fighter jets. Can people die in the effort? Unfortunately, because a lot of these areas, due in part to United States action/inaction are unstable and needs order to be restored. There may be some unfortunate events but we should not run away at the first sign of trouble. Will this country and the world be better for it? Undoubtedly. This is a potential win-win for all the nations of the world and we should take it because it is the right thing to do and we are a nation that others look to as that City on that Hill that is a beacon to all who want what the American Dream is for themselves and their countries. This is not a call for American Empire. This is a call for America to fulfill the historic role that it staked out for itself when it instituted the Marshall Plan and created organizations like the Peace and Ameri Corps. As President Obama said, "This is our time."
