Back in 1993, it was not certain whether the North American Free Trade Agreement would pass Congress. Support was upside down and former Presidential Candidates Ross Perot and Patrick Buchanan were stoking blue-collar fears of a giant sucking sound of American Jobs to Mexico. Along came Vice President Al Gore who challenged Perot to a live debate on Larry King Live and history was made as Gore crushed him, making support for N.A.F.T.A. easier to swallow and it passed both houses of Congress. Afterwards, more jobs in this country have been created than lost. It has not been perfect as cities and communities in the Rust Belt were hit hard by the new realities and could not adapt. Retraining these people in new careers had a mixed track record at best. However, the country overall has been better for it.
History has a chance to repeat itself next week as Senators Sanders and Kobuchar debate Senators Graham and Cassidy over the path to accessible and affordable health care. Get out the popcorn and let the games begin.
