It is not where the money is.

The Trump Administration will be releasing its budget ideas on Thursday. Early leaks reveal draconian cuts in areas ranging from the State Department to the EPA to food stamps to NPR. Unfortunately, to make a dent in our national debt, the Administration is not taking a look at Social Security and Medicare, the interest on our debt, and national defense (all three make up 85 percent of our budget). Sensible and relatively painless reforms (means testing or raising the payroll cap on social security earnings, government negotiation on drug prices, and a carbon tax for example)  are needed to attack our national debt. Cutting programs to help the environment and the impoverished create more problems and solutions. Politicians in Washington need to come up with a better way to manage our nation's purse.
