No one, including the President, can white wash History

The President's attempts to whitewash history the last couple of days in reference to the removal of statues that honor members of the Confederate Military and Political Leadership are eerily reminiscent of the time a couple of years ago when Right Wing Fanatics were up in arms when the College Board released their curriculum for Advanced Placement American History. While the College Board did step into it by omitting names in the curriculum like Thomas Jefferson (and Rosa Parks), most on the fringe of the right wing thought the standards put too much emphasis on the negative as opposed to the positive aspects of our history. Unfortunately for them, the truth is sometimes a mixed bag. We celebrate Columbus because of his accidental and unknowing discovery of the New World. However, we can not lose sight that he and the explorers that followed him mostly treated the natives with contempt and genocidal cruelty. We rightly honor Washington, Jefferson, and Madison as Founding Fathers but they were flawed like all human beings who were slave owners with one of them (Jefferson) having an affair with a slave woman who may actually have been his sister in law. The current President honors Andrew Jackson and while Jackson did positive things for the country, he was a brutal thug towards the Indians. These are facts and we do a disservice to our children in school and society as a whole by ignoring the bad. Look at our current President. He is a living example of a leader who has not learned the lessons of history. Learning Histories lessons helps us better build a better tomorrow.
