When Douglas MacArthur in 1951 openly spoke out in taking the Korean War to the next level despite risking a third World War with China, he was insubordinate towards the United States and United Nations policy which caused President Truman to fire him. Despite the testimony of Joint Chiefs Chairman Omar Bradley that a war with China would be "the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time," there was a segment of the American Populace that felt Truman and his generals were weak and they should have let MacArthur alone to carry out his war plans. The current President and some of those around him, in the recent situation with North Korea, appear to be the heirs to that minority opinion. Should we take North Korea's nuclear ambitions seriously? Absolutely. Is a preemptive attack on them worth the risk of starting World War Three? Absolutely not. There is a deal to be made between the Koreas, China, and the United States. As previous posts have indicated, it is time to put an official end to the 67 year Korean War and come to a settlement that heals the divisions in Korea (a new Sunshine Policy coupled with a nice payoff to the Korean leadership with exile to a nice tropical island where their needs are met), provides China with security and economic guarantees and continues United States access to Korean markets. It is the only way forward
