Idea of the Week: Thoughts on Veepstakes; It is still about who is ready to be President on Day One

With the unfortunate withdrawals of Senators Amy Klobuchar and Catherine Cortez Masto from the 2020 Veepstakes, this appears to be the current list of potential Vice President options for Democratic Nominee Joe Biden.

Stacey Abrams
Senator Tammy Baldwin
Representative Val Demings
Senator Tammy Duckworth
Senator Maggie Hassan
Senator Kamala Harris
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham
Governor Gina Raimondo
Susan Rice
Senator Elizabeth Warren
Governor Gretchen Whitmer

All of these candidates would be infinitely better than Mike Pence and are solid Progressive Democrats.

There are factors to support each person.

However, the prime consideration in choosing the next Vice President should be the ability to be President at a moment's notice.

Using that as a criterion, the best possible candidates Joe Biden should consider are:

Senator and former Governor Maggie Hassan
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham
Governor Gina Raimondo
Governor Gretchen Whitmer

All five ladies are or have been chief executives of a state or major city. That would be invaluable to a Biden Administration that wants to immediately start to put right what Donald Trump made wrong and begin moving the country in a forward direction.

Each of these five candidates brings different strengths.

Senator Hassan, being a former Governor, probably has the most well-rounded experience of the five. Her selection would probably end the Trump team's slim hopes of winning New Hampshire and one of Maines Electoral College votes. She would probably also help appeal to independent voters.

Mayor Lance Bottoms is currently leading Atlanta through the Coronavirus pandemic and civil strife. She also would be the first African American Female Vice Presidential selection in history. She may also be able to generate regional support in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida.

New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham would bring executive experience and could be the first Hispanic Vice Presidential pick in history. She could solidify New Mexico, Nevada, and Colorado and help bring in neighboring Arizona.

Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo would bring a pragmatic progressive approach and ideological compatibility that Biden could connect with in a potential governing partner. She would help appeal to independent voters.

Gretchen Whitmer, the Governor of Michigan, showed in her State of the Union response in 2020 that she is ready for prime time. She also showed, during the early stages of the Coronavirus that she would not let Trump push her around. If chosen, she could bring Michigan back into the Democratic fold and could extend Biden's midwestern appeal to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and Iowa.

These candidates are all:

Qualified.
Progressive.
Have electoral appeal.
Are ready to help govern in the new Administration.
Are prepared and ready to be President.

These are the individuals that are probably the best choices for the Biden team to consider.

They are the ones that will best help a President Biden steer the country back in the right direction.
