Saying "we need to tackle the growing hunger crisis in America," President Biden has signed an Executive Order allowing the Department of Agriculture to let families hardest hit by the economic downturn caused by the pandemic to enroll for more "generous benefits" in the SNAP-Food Stamp Program.
Biden hopes this order will allow millions of kids and their families (especially those that can not currently access their local school meal programs) to fight food insecurity.
The President cited that one-seventh of all households in America, including twenty percent of Latino and Black American Households report they do not have enough food to eat. That includes, according to Biden, 30 million adults and as many as 12 million children.
Biden reminded the viewers that "these families are in this situation through no fault of their own." He also said that while the COVID 19 stimulus bill the Biden/Harris Administration has released contains additional aid to combat food insecurity, individuals and families on the verge of starvation can not wait.
The President also signed an Executive Order directing the Department of Labor not to deny unemployment insurance to workers who do not want to work in an unsafe Coronavirus environment, saying "no one should have to choose between their own livelihoods and their own health or their loved ones in the middle of a deadly pandemic."
Mr. Biden also said he would sign an order making federal workers that are paid with federal tax dollars get the living salary and benefits they deserve. A $15.00 an hour minimum wage for these workers is likely coming soon.
He also said his team would make it easier for recipients of direct assistance from the recently passed CARES act to receive their aid more quickly.
It is gratifying to have a President that puts the needy in the country first.
That is the way it should be.
