The Finale of The Plot Against America should serve as a WARNING to Everyone: It Can Happen Here

Over the last six weeks, HBO has broadcast the adaptation of Philip Roth’s The Plot Against America.
The plot of the work, an alternative dystopian history of early 1940’s America, shows the original America First darling, famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, running for President in 1940 against Franklin Roosevelt on an anti-war platform.
Lindbergh, riding an isolationist and nativist Anti-Semitic wave (sound familiar) wins the election and through the efforts of him, his Vice President Burton Wheeler, and his Secretary of the Interior, Henry Ford, launch normalization relations with Nazi Germany and, with the assistance of a naïve Rabbi, a relocation of the nation’s Jews from urban to rural areas.
In the original ending of the book, Lindbergh is killed (probably by the Nazi’s when he would not formalize an American Final Solution, Vice President Wheeler and Secretary Ford launch a pogrom against American Jews, Lindbergh’s widow speaks out against the actions against the Jews and other minorities, Franklin Roosevelt wins reelection in a special election, and the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor later than they actually did. The United States, like in reality, does help defeat the Axis with the other Allies.
The showrunners of the HBO adaptation, David Simon and Ed Burns, gave the miniseries a more thought-provoking ending that serves as a warning to everyone worried about dirty tricks in the November 3, 2020 elections.
The last five minutes of the show have shady government characters, with Frank Sinatra singing “That’s America to Me” in the background:
  • Burning ballots
  • Taking away voting machines.
  • Turning away people registered to vote in the precinct.
  • Having people wait in long lines to vote.
  • An election result in doubt.
The showrunners intended this ending to be a message for everyone to worry about.
People should be encouraged to watch this series and compare the events dramatized in this adaptation and compare it with the xenophobic, anti-immigrant, conspiracy fringe actions of reactionary leaders and Trump Zone-Fox Island Residents over the last couple of decades.
Everyone should keep in mind the title of another dystopian alternative reality work, Sinclair Lewis’s work, It Can Happen Here.
Please remember to register/sign up for the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) in Arizona or any state that allows early or absentee balloting and mail in your vote by November 3, 2020.
Also, remember to check in with the Secretary of State’s office where you live to verify your mail-in ballot was received, processed, verified, and counted.
Please also remember to get any voter id a state or county office may need to process your ballot.
Remember Election Day is only 196 days away and the future of Democracy, the Republic, and our real freedoms may be on the line.
