Progressive Idea of the Week: Expand Service Learning and National Service; do not cut it.

The current Administration thinks that the Corporation for National Service should be eliminated. This has been a dream of die hard right wingers since Bill Clinton created the program in his first term. This organization which includes Americorp has done great service in communities across the country in areas such as education, aid to the poor, and disaster relief.

National Service should be expanded, not disbanded. There should be a service learning graduation requirement in all public and charter primary and secondary schools. Furthermore, people should get the option to get their first two years of their undergraduate degrees for free if they give two years of service to a community or communities in needs.
