Our nation has a gun problem

The perpetrator of the mass shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday had no criminal record. He had no history of mental illness. He was able to buy dozens of weapons and passed background checks every time. The same can be said with other mass shooters. For example, the person who committed the atrocious acts at Sandy Hook was on no one's radar and he was able to procure the weapons from his families possessions. We need to have background checks for gun purchases. We need to have waiting periods for gun purchases. We need to have people licensed for being able to possess a weapon. Weapons should also be registered. However, as recent history has shown, that may not be enough and new thinking is required to combat this surge in mass shootings. Maybe we should restrict a number of weapons that people can own. Maybe we take off the market the weapons that inflict such horrific damage. Hunters do not need those weapons and neither do people who need to defend themselves. We can still have the second amendment and still have sensible gun regulation. You can have both. Do not let the National Rifle Association tell you different. It is time to protect our people with sensible gun control legislation. Please tell your state and federal representative and senator. Please contact your Governor and the President We do not have a moment to lose.
